Athletics
“For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things.” I Timothy 4:8 (NKJV)
Contemporary author, Brian Kilmeade proposes in his book Games Do Count that “athletic exploits” pursued in childhood “shape who we are today.” His stories profiling modern success and extraordinary heroics include, among others, the 4 heroes of September 11th who overpowered the terrorists on flight 93, headed for the White House. Every one of the 4 businessmen who stood there and faced down death, were later described by their family members as owing their heroics to childhood involvement in athletic competitions.
The character training, competition and camaraderie built on the foundation of sports is an integral part of Christian formation, helping the Christian young man and woman learn what it means to practice godly discipline.
